Licensing a trade mark or design can be a great way to grow a brand, particularly internationally. However, it does come with inherent risk, and licensees need to be fully aware of the potential downsides. We have a great deal of experience in advising clients on whether it is appropriate, commercially and financially, to enter into a licensing agreement; and if so, on what terms the deal should be done.
Different industry sectors have different issues to be addressed. For example, the amount spent on advertising in the fashion and beauty industries are very different. We have an in-depth understanding of these issues, and of the appropriate royalty rates that should be charged.
We work on licensing agreements for clients from various areas of the brands sector, including, fashion, cosmetics, jewelry and increasingly, celebrity designers. The list includes beauty businesses such as By Terry, fashion companies such as J Mendel and Matthew Williamson, and celebrity designers such as Sienna and Savannah Miller and Jade Jagger.
