Civil partnerships

Under a new law introduced in December 2005, civil partnerships allow same-sex couples to benefit from the same legal rights as heterosexual married couples.

Our family team are experts in this field, with Katharine Landells having co-authored a leading textbook on the subject: Civil Partnership - The New Law (Jordans).

Both male and female clients seek advice from us on the legal rights and responsibilities involved in entering into a civil partnership, and on the implications of ending it, including the arrangements for any children of the relationship. We also work with them to draw up effective pre-civil partnership agreements. We also advise same-sex couples moving to the UK who want guidance on the status of a foreign same-sex union.

Our wealth of experience in conventional divorce proceedings is equally invaluable in this area.

Our civil partnership work

  • Negotiating a number of pre-registration agreements for high-profile clients.
  • Acting in the UK's first 'gay divorce', in early 2007.
