Heritage Property

Many of the houses on country estates are buildings of architectural importance. Many estates also own collections of important works of art, furniture, porcelain and other objets d'art. Our legal advice helps to ensure that their value is preserved for the benefit of future generations.

We bring many decades of experience to any discussion concerning the preservation of heritage properties and advise both individuals and charities on all issues affecting the main house and its contents.

Our work includes anticipating a shift in priorities when an estate is handed down to the next generation, finding innovative solutions that will keep collections intact and avoid forced sales, or taking account of major changes in the tax regime.

Recent Work

  • Giving advice to US owners of buildings with respect to Qualified Conservation Easements.
  • Representing individuals and their private foundations as to the advisability of holding a historic building within a private foundation structure.
  • Acting for a major UK landowner to negotiate the sale, for a record price, of several important paintings currently on show in a leading UK gallery.
