Historic houses

Advising the owners of historic houses has been one of the core aspects of our business since the firm began over a hundred years ago. Indeed, a very high proportion of our current clients have acquired important works of art and antiques associated with their homes through inheritance or as investments.

Our team of lawyers are highly knowledgeable in all areas of law affecting heritage buildings and their contents. Clients benefit from our longstanding relationships with auction houses, art consultants, dealers and importantly, government bodies.

In the UK, an increasing number of private homes must now, for the first time, grant some ‘public access' to the heritage collections or items kept there. Our team have been involved in the government's consultation process from the outset, and have successfully negotiated mutually acceptable arrangements with the government for access to clients' property.

Recent work

  • Acting for a major UK landowner to negotiate the sale, for a record price, of several important paintings currently on show in a leading UK gallery.
  • Giving advice to US owners of buildings with respect to Qualified Conservation Easements.
  • Representing individuals and their private foundations as to the advisability of holding a historic building within a private foundation structure.
