Civil partnerships

Civil partnerships enable same-sex couples to benefit from the same legal rights as married couples. The law was introduced in December 2005, so these are still relatively early days; but our family team is recognised within the profession as being at the forefront of the field, with two members of the team having co-authored the leading textbook on the subject: Civil Partnership - The New Law (Jordans).

We advise clients, both men and women, on the legal rights and responsibilities involved in entering into a civil partnership, and on the implications of ending it. We also work with them to draw up comprehensive and effective pre-registration agreements, commonly known as pre-nups.

Clients may be based in the UK or elsewhere in the world; we also advise couples moving to the UK who want guidance on the status of a foreign same-sex union.

Recent work

  • Negotiating a number of pre-registration agreements for high-profile clients.
  • Acting in the UK's first 'gay divorce', in early 2007.
