A substantial proportion of the work we do involves the breakdown of unmarried relationships, beyond the scope of standard legal marital rights and responsibilities. Our experience in this field is extensive and two members of our team have been at the forefront of the campaign by family lawyers to reform cohabitation law. We have also been closely involved with the Law Commission’s consultation paper on cohabitation law reform published in 2006-2007.
We advise on all aspects of cohabitation, from the drafting of cohabitation agreements to the various complex issues arising on separation. These include property ownership, financial claims (frequently brought by unmarried mothers) on behalf of children for capital and income provision, paternity disputes, and other child-related issues such as parental responsibility, residence, contact and schooling.

Working with colleagues in our wealth planning team, we are also able to guide clients on tax issues and the creation of appropriate structures to provide for children. Our aim, as in all areas of family law, is to achieve the best possible outcome for each client, ideally through negotiation, but if necessary through litigation.
Our broad client base includes city professionals and celebrities, landowners and entrepreneurs. In some cases we are dealing with situations where the couple have not lived together at all, but have had a child. Many circumstances also involve an international perspective, particularly those involving film stars and sportspeople (for example footballers, who may only be working in England for a couple of years or so).
