Cohabitants' claims

A substantial proportion of the work we do involves the breakdown of unmarried relationships, beyond the scope of standard legal marital rights and responsibilities.

Our experience in this field is extensive and two members of our team have been at the forefront of the campaign by family lawyers to reform cohabitation law.  We have also been closely involved with the Law Commission’s consultation paper on cohabitation law reform published in 2006-2007.

We advise on all aspects of cohabitation, from the drafting of cohabitation agreements to the various complex issues arising on separation. These include property ownership, financial claims (frequently brought by unmarried mothers) on behalf of children for capital and income provision, paternity disputes, and other child-related issues such as parental responsibility, residence, contact and schooling.
