Landed estates

We have the skills and experience to help clients involved in rural property in all walks of life - from tenth-generation landowners to buyers finally realising their dream of a country home and a few (or many) acres of land.

With a team of more than 20 lawyers drawn from different areas within the firm, we are able to provide multidisciplinary advice for landowners, whether they hold private rural property, historic estates with houses open to the public, or newly acquired farms.

We focus on the increasingly commercial requirements of landed clients, and devise innovative solutions to problems that are associated with owning country land in the 21st century. Issues range from the maze of regulations now surrounding rural life to inheritance tax on historic art collections, and from boundary disputes to land development opportunities involving leisure and tourism and the political sensitivities relating to conservation and the environment.

Having built up our client base over many decades, the team acts for more than 130 landed estates across England, Scotland and Wales, with clients in almost every county. They include historic landowners such as the Duke of Marlborough and Blenheim Estates, as well as successful entrepreneurs from the US, Russia and Asia who benefit from our integrated international tax and real estate expertise.

We also have considerable experience of working with clients wishing to buy or sell estates in other countries.
