Coroners

Our commercial litigation practice acts for coroners, advises bereaved families who wish to challenge coronial decisions and acts for third parties who are involved in inquest procedures, judicial reviews of coroners' decisions, and other aspects of the coronial process. In many cases we liaise closely with government departments, the police and NHS trusts.

We can advise on all aspects of coronial law. In fact one of our team, Paul Matthews, is himself a part-time coroner for the City of London and a leading authority in this field.

Our clients are all based in England and Wales, and include the Coroners for Devon, Nottinghamshire, Cambridgeshire and North London.

Recent work

  • Acting for HM Coroner Southern District of Greater London in judicial proceedings brought against him over the death of a woman in hospital following childbirth, and the question of whether he had reasonable cause to suggest she died an unnatural death.
  • Advising HM Coroner for North London in R (Hurst) v Commissioner of Police for the Metropolis, which was decided in the House of Lords and has had important implications for the way in which the European Convention of Human Rights is interpreted.
