The development market has seen significant changes recently with big development companies looking for merger partners or take over targets in order to benefit from the economies of scale that increased production brings. This has left the smaller private developers looking for the more imaginative and complex development opportunities, which when they come good, reap better returns.

Our real estate practice advises on all aspects of real estate development, whether acting for developers, landowners, architects or builders.

For developer clients - which may be commercial or non-profit organizations - we acquire sites, provide legal support during the planning and construction phases, and conduct the final unit sales.

Recent work

  • Represented a real estate developer in the sale of an apartment building in Stamford, CT, which was part of a "like-kind" exchange transaction and simultaneously structured an option to buy-out one of the members of development company by the other member.   
  • As part of a continuing, national, and exclusive representation, represented real estate developer in connection with simultaneous negotiation of a 75-year ground lease and corresponding build-to-suit retail space lease for national retailer. 
  • Acting for McCabe Builders (UK) Limited in relation to significant residential developments in north London and on Clapham Common.
  • Acting for private bank C Hoare & Co in relation to its own development proposals.
  • Acting in the sale of land for residential development to various UK house builders, including Barratt, Crest Nicholson, David Wilson Homes and KingsOak.
  • Advising on the development of one of London's most prestigious residential schemes - The Knightsbridge, from site acquisition to unit sales.
  • Facilitating the ground lease acquisition, environmental remediation and build-to-suit development of an industrial property in the US to include a 120,000 square foot warehouse with showroom and office facilities.
  • Advising a US REIT (real estate investment trust) in drawing up a retail development ground lease.
  • Structuring of an investment vehicle for acquisition and development of resort and luxury residences in Turks & Caicos.
