A Commencement Order has brought into effect key provisions of the Charities Act (Northern Ireland) 2008 relating to the establishment and maintenance of a register of charities, as well as provisions relating to charity names, application of property cy-près and relief of trustees from liability, amongst others. The CCNI has since announced that it will start registering charities in the autumn of 2013, as registration is to be compulsory for all charities operating in Northern Ireland. The CCNI has emphasised that this will be a managed process as there are an estimated 7,000 – 12,000 such charities in Northern Ireland.

The CCNI has also announced that it will start consulting on its interim proposals on reporting requirements in early October 2013.
