Bill Kambas, Jim Dougherty and David Lehn: CT Law Tribune's 2019 New England Trailblazers

Withers Bergman partners Bill Kambas, Jim Dougherty and David Lehn were recognized by the Connecticut Law Tribune as "2019 New England Trailblazers" for their work on an amicus curiae brief with the U.S. Supreme Court that influenced a recent decision in what may be the most significant state taxation and trust case in decades.

Written by Justice Sonia Sotomayor, the unanimous decision in the North Carolina Department of Revenue v. Kimberley Rice Kaestner 1992 Family Trust case, clarifies that a trust beneficiary’s residence in a state does not establish enough of a connection to permit the state to tax it.
