Press Release: Withers expands BVI services, hires new partner

A year after the launch of its office in the British Virgin Islands (BVI), international law firm Withers LLP has announced a significant extension to the range of services offered by the BVI office and the hire of a new partner, Jon Wall.

After a successful first year spent focusing upon litigation, insolvency and restructuring, the BVI office will expand its service range to offer advice on a range of corporate, banking and finance transactions, funds and regulatory matters, as well as legal opinions and matters of BVI law.

This development comes in response to the continuing popularity of the BVI as an offshore jurisdiction and frequent use of BVI vehicles in corporate and finance transactions. The new service range will be promoted to clients across Withers’ office network in the US, UK, Europe and Hong Kong.

This month the BVI office also welcomes a new partner – finance and commercial litigation specialist Jon Wall.  Jon has spent most of his career at Norton Rose with periods in industry at HSBC, BNP Paribas and as General Counsel at Carlsberg UK.  He joins from Bond Pearce LLP, where he was a partner responsible for developing the firm’s finance and arbitration capability across London and the South East.  He is a solicitor advocate who has strong experience of handling complex cross-border litigation and arbitration on behalf of a variety of blue chip clients including BMW, Lloyds TSB, Credit Agricole, PWC, Easyjet and others.

Commenting on his appointment, Jon Wall said:

“I am delighted to be joining Withers at an exciting time in the firm’s international expansion. The BVI plays a pivotal role in today’s global corporate environment.  A Financial Times survey confirmed the BVI’s position as the second largest source of international foreign direct investment, with upwards of $125 billion invested through the BVI each year.  This provides huge opportunities for a high quality dispute resolution, commercial, finance and trust practice.  Withers is uniquely placed to service clients from its BVI office, whilst offering the wider resources, support and knowhow of a large international on-shore law firm.”

In the BVI, Withers has also seen significant growth in its litigation practice and has secured several high profile instructions, including acting for the liquidators of institutional ‘feeder’ funds into Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC, the collapsed ponzi scheme.
Margaret Robertson, Managing Director, said:

“These developments are evidence of the growing strength of our international network and Withers’ increasing presence in the corporate arena.  More and more, cross-border litigation and international transactions involve a BVI component, and we have invested heavily in the jurisdiction to provide a first class legal team who are experts in their chosen fields. The extended range of services offered by our BVI office will help provide the comprehensive, coordinated global service our clients demand.”
