Press release: Withers strengthens charities and philanthropy practice

London, 28 June: International law firm Withers has today announced the appointment of Alana Lowe-Petraske as an associate in the firm's Charity and Philanthropy Group.

Alana, who will be based in London, joins from Bates Wells & Braithwaite London LLP, where she was a solicitor in the charity and social enterprise group. She specialises in providing commercial, regulatory and tax advice to not-for-profit organisations and their donors operating in the UK and globally, including advice on cross-border structures and transactions, corporate and individual philanthropy, donor-advised funds, fiduciary issues and insolvency. US/UK cross-border giving and global not-for-profit groups are a particular area of focus. Alana also has experience of working in industry and advised on overseas funding for the Reuters Foundation during her time in the General Counsel's Office of the Reuters Group PLC.

Alana's appointment comes in response to a continued demand for advice on giving, both from philanthropists and charities, despite the recession. The hire demonstrates Withers' commitment to developing its dedicated not-for-profit team, now 8-strong in London.

Alison Paines, head of the Charities and Philanthropy Group, comments:

“We are delighted to welcome Alana to the team and believe that her blend of expertise and experience will complement our capabilities perfectly.”

Alana Lowe-Petraske adds:

_“I am excited to be joining Withers. The team is rightly recognised as one of the leading charity and philanthropy practices and is uniquely placed in the growing international charities and philanthropy sector. I look forward to working with the team to assist the firm's varied and dynamic client base.”
