Withers appoints new head of International Regulatory and Corporate Crime

Withers boosts litigation offering in London and Singapore with addition of Owen and team of two Senior Counsel and support staff

International law firm Withers LLP can confirm the appointment of Gerallt Owen and his team to its London and Singapore offices.

Gerallt joins as a Partner from Crowell & Moring’s London office, where he was head of International Regulatory and Corporate Crime. Currently recommended as a leading individual in the Chambers & Partners fraud rankings, Gerallt is an experienced and highly regarded lawyer in this area.

He has advised on high profile investigations and proceedings brought by the Serious Fraud Office (SFO), the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), Health & Safety Executive (HSE), the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills (DBIS), HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC), and the Financial Services Authority (FSA). Gerallt has also been listed in The Lawyer’s “Hot 100” and serves as a consultant editor for the LexisNexis publication Fraud: Law, Practice and Procedure. He recently chaired the 2012 China Anti-Corruption Summit in Shanghai.

Gerallt’s appointment will bolster Withers’ commercial litigation practice, one of the fastest growing practices within the firm. With more than 70 litigation lawyers based in Europe, the Caribbean, Asia and the US, litigation accounts for half of the revenues of the London office. The firm’s Commercial Litigation practice advises clients on complex commercial and financial services disputes and investigations, and will now expand to add corporate crime to its existing fraud offering for the first time.

Gerallt brings with him a team of senior lawyers and support staff, including two Senior Counsel, Anne Davies and Fiona Simpson. Anne advises companies and individuals on health and safety, product liability, environmental, financial crime and corporate governance matters, and Fiona specialises in civil fraud and professional discipline, advising corporations, financial institutions and individuals in a range of commercial disputes. Though his team will be based in London, Gerallt will spend a significant part of the year working with Asian clients in Singapore, where Withers recently announced the opening of its tenth office.

Gerallt Owen comments:

‘I’m thrilled to be joining Withers at what is an exciting time for the firm. Withers has a top class fraud offering and an impressive plan for growth in this area and I am very much looking forward to becoming a part of that.’

Christopher Coffin, Global Head of Litigation said:

‘Gerallt’s arrival is excellent news for the firm – especially given his experience in Singapore, China and the rest of Asia, as this is a key area of focus for us to achieve our ambitious growth plans for the contentious practice. With his standing and experience, he and his team will make a valuable contribution from day one’.

Though a precise date is yet to be confirmed, it is anticipated that Gerallt and his team will join Withers on June 1.
