James Hockin

Associate | London

James is an associate in the employment team.

He is an adviser, negotiator and - when required - a determined litigator with a particular focus on employment law matters.

He is dual qualified in New York and England & Wales and assists and advises both employer and employee clients on contentious and non-contentious matters including those involving unfair dismissal, whistleblowing, redundancy and discrimination. He is particularly adept at assisting senior executives on a range of issues at all stages of the employment relationship, whether it be advising on the employment documentation at the start of the relationship or planning exit strategies and negotiating severance agreements when that relationship comes to an end.

James has experience of litigating both in the Employment Tribunal and the High Court, whether it be employment matters or more general commercial disputes.

Clients comment on James’ ‘outstanding’ and ‘carefully considered’ advice, whilst colleagues praise him for his ‘calm control’, his ability to be ‘professional, personable and approachable under pressure’ and the fact that he ‘operates at an exceptionally high standard’.

Me in a minute

As a lawyer, I get the chance to help clients in many different jobs and walks of life

Growing up, there were a myriad of different jobs I thought I wanted to do: doctor (but I could not stand the sight of blood), pilot (but my red-green colour-blindness might not have been ideal when bringing that plane into land) or Formula One driver (a bit too tall for those racing cars). Instead, as a lawyer, I get the chance to help clients in many different jobs and walks of life, to understand the businesses they are in and the goals and priorities they have. Being a lawyer is about more than knowing ‘the law’, it is about understanding what your client needs doing and helping them do it.

If you’re anything like me then you know what it is like having not only a ‘nationality’ but an ‘internationality’. I was born in the UK, am qualified to practice law in New York and England & Wales, and have a fiancé with American nationality. With cross-border experience, particularly in employment matters, I pride myself on being able to help employees and employers alike with tricky international and domestic problems.

When I am not active as a governor at my local secondary school, I can be found burning food in the kitchen. In the event that I cannot be found, I am most likely travelling East Coast America or giving my English Heritage card an airing.
