Me in a minute

My job involves meeting a lot of people, using logic when negotiating deals, and applying analytical skills

When I was growing up, Sherlock Holmes was my favourite fictional character and I was always fascinated by his observation skills and deductive method. I even tried to develop those skills myself and apply them in daily life. Whilst I didn’t get far enough, I always knew I wanted to have a profession where I would be able to develop and use analytical skills, reasoning, and attention to detail.

When I started practicing as a lawyer after law school, I knew immediately I had chosen the right profession. My job involves meeting a lot of people, using logic when negotiating deals, and applying analytical skills when drafting or reviewing complex documents. It also enables me to travel around the world and learn to interact with different cultures, be it through spending two months on a major gas field development in Yemen, or two weeks negotiating a mining transaction in Brazil, or a week in Kenya during rainy season developing the model PSA for the country.

My experience has taught me some valuable lessons which I try to apply in my every day life: listen more and talk less (works very well at home), do not take action unless absolutely certain of the client’s ultimate objective, and be mindful that a successful deal often requires concessions to be made by all parties involved.
