Akira is a registered foreign lawyer in the corporate team.

He is a dual qualified lawyer, admitted in the UK and Japan. His experience includes acting as a lead counsel in the structuring and formation of various types of funds. He also has a diverse experience in advising in transactions and regulations which constitute of investment ecosystem. In addition to his corporate practice, Akira also advises Japanese private client in cross-border succession planning and divorce matters.

Akira started his career as a Japanese qualified lawyer (bengoshi) at Mori Hamada & Matsumoto (MHM) where he mainly handled finance and corporate transactions. During his 10-years legal practice at MHM, he was seconded to the Financial Services Agency of Japan (FSA). As a deputy director of the FSA, he led on substantial amendments to the Japanese investment fund legal system and was involved in the planning on the corporate governance and the new disclosure initiative and integrated reporting. In addition, he had been seconded to leading law firms in London and Australia and an European major bank where he handled various cross-border transactions and advised on complicated financial regulations. Prior to joining Withers, he was at a well-known medical AI startup in Japan, where he was responsible not only for legal matters but also for business planning and AI development management.

While working for the FinTech clients at MHM, he took part in the famous FinTech Programme from the University of Oxford, where he learned about technologies such as blockchains, artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum computing as well as the way of commercialization under the legal system.

Took a central role in drafting legal documents of and advising on public offerings and private placements in Japan for many mutual funds domiciled in foreign jurisdictions such as Cayman Islands, Luxembourg and Irelands.

Successfully completed the negotiation with the Financial Services Agency of Japan (the FSA) so that the U.S. client in the ETF industry was granted with the legally privileged position by the Commissioner of the FSA.

Advised on issuance of corporate bonds and composition of collective investment schemes, insurance products, securitization transactions, cryptocurrencies and other financial products/transactions.
