A higher education institution retained our services to represent it as trustee of the estate of an alumnus who had recently passed away. Although the client was not staffed for this specialized task, we assisted and encouraged the client to undertake the role and thereby best preserve its substantial inheritance. Despite complications and threats from disgruntled heirs, the client was able to effectively and professionally carry out the duties of trustee and distribute the estate among the heirs and preserve its residuary share in memory of its departed alumnus.

A wealthy widow asked us to help her design an estate plan that would bring together the disparate interests and personalities of her children and teach them to adopt the philanthropic vision she and her late husband initiated. Through design of a family foundation with unique grant-making decision elements, coupled with a long term estate plan designed to protect the expectations of the children for fairness and equality of treatment, we were able to assist the client accomplish her goals and gain peace of mind that she would help her family maintain beneficial relationships into the future.

A successful family business enterprise sought our help not only in preserving the financial and community benefit of the rapidly growing business, but also needed our services in bringing the second, third and even fourth generations of family members to an understanding of and participation in the family legacy of long term support of business success, family cohesion, employee and community benefit, and philanthropic outreach. Over a hundred family members are now represented by the family council, the family office and the family foundations and participate in tax-wise estate planning structures all keyed to the preservation of the founding generation’s vision and legacy.

Me in a minute

I enjoy helping a successful family to share their legacy

Working intimately with a successful family to share their legacy with the rising generation and give back to the community that supported their success is what I enjoy the most about estate planning. Nothing is more important to families of wealth than to be able to wisely pass on to their progeny not only family wealth but also family values built on a lifetime of experience. If I can play an instrumental part in designing legal and taxwise structures for families to accomplish these goals effectively, and thereby help them gain peace of mind, I feel I have done my best work.
