Jonathan N. Garbutt

Jonathan is special counsel in the private client and tax team.

Jonathan’s practice focuses on all aspects of Canadian income tax law, including general tax planning, trusts and estates, global corporate tax minimization, M&A tax advice, international private investment and tax controversy and litigation. He also has experience with international transfer pricing matters.

Jonathan’s experience includes advising international high net worth individuals, families, family offices, financial institutions and trust companies with respect to matters involving the Canadian tax regime. He has advised clients concerning all aspects of non-resident trusts settled by or for the benefit of Canadian residents, as well as the tax-efficient immigration and emigration for high net worth individuals into and out of Canada. He also has advised high net worth Canadian resident clients in off-shore investments and on the structuring of such investments and transactions for financial institutions.

Jonathan regularly speaks on these issues at various private banking events, both in Canada and around the world.

Prior to joining Withers, Jonathan worked at a large firm in Canada providing tax advisory and compliance services for global high net worth individuals, cross-border families and businesses. Before becoming a lawyer, Jonathan’s career included working as an economist at the Canadian Electricity Association and with Nakamae International Economic Research in Tokyo, Japan. Jonathan is admitted to practice in the Alberta and Ontario provinces in Canada.

Jonathan is not currently admitted to practice law in the state of California.
