Application process

We primarily recruit our first year associates through our summer associate program and therefore we recommend that you take a look at the summer program pages of this site.

We would, however, also like to hear from interested 3L and tax LLM candidates for direct hire to one of our offices. If you are a 3L or LLM candidate, please use our online recruitment system to make a direct application.

First year training

We offer an extensive training program for those embarking on a legal career. Our first year associate training program is designed to ensure that junior attorneys are given all the help and training they need to develop their legal careers, encouraging the potential to become the partners of the future.

As a first year you should expect to be exposed to all aspects of our Wealth Planning & Tax practice. Our intention is to create every opportunity for you to become a cross trained attorney who understand our business thoroughly.

Our formal orientation program for new associates provides an introduction to the major areas of the firm’s practice. To further enhance and refine their legal skills and knowledge base, our associates attend various training sessions and lunch gatherings frequently throughout the year, as well as training seminars and conferences sponsored by professional bar associations.

Each first year associate is assigned a mentor. The mentor is on hand to guide the associate through their acclimation to firm life. We encourage associates to assume responsibility of substantial matters at an early stage in their careers.

Summer associates at Withers are given the opportunity to explore the firm’s varied practice groups and receive substantial assignments from partners and associates. I was given real work and responsibility, and provided the tools necessary to succeed. Attorneys at the firm were genuinely invested in the summer associates’ training and development, and it was clear that they cared about my growth and success. The firm embraces a culture of diversity and inclusion, as well as a sense of community and teamwork. After a rewarding summer experience, I look forward to starting my legal career at Withers.

Formal reviews with HR take place regularly and feedback is given on a project-by-project basis.

Career Progression
The career progression of all our staff, including Partners, is important to us. As we move into new markets and anticipate changes in current markets, we need people who can adapt to change and who are keen to push the boundaries of their own knowledge to help us maintain our leading position and reputation.

The firm’s strategy of growth coupled with our dynamic and innovative culture ensures that there are plenty of opportunities for staff to progress their careers.

Whilst it’s true that we need leaders, the opportunities extend wider than leadership. There is a multitude of opportunities available to develop your career, from being involved in our cross-department special interest groups, undertaking an overseas secondment, working on a committee to drive a legal or non-legal activity or undertaking pro bono work, through to following new market leads and/or becoming an industry specialist in your chosen field.

Training is key to the support on offer to those who take up the opportunities within the firm and everything from language workshops through to leadership coaching is possible. Click here to read more about our training for lawyers.
