Managing conflict in relationships

Broadcaster Dorothy Thompson wrote that 'Peace is not the absence of conflict but the presence of creative alternatives for responding to conflict -- alternatives to passive or aggressive responses, alternatives to violence'.

This concept captures the approach we frequently recommend our clients take when they are coping with problems within their most personal relationships.

The breakdown of a relationship can undermine fundamental certainties about who you are, your future and your priorities in life, and often some of the only concrete things within your control are how you choose to respond to the situation and the decisions you make to move forwards. In the midst of conflict, we try to help our clients adopt strategies to achieve the most constructive outcomes.

If there are children in the relationship, then there’s no doubt that this becomes more important than ever. Any decisions will have a long-lasting and potentially very damaging impact on children, and the experience of conflict during separation processes can leave lasting scars. On a practical level, being able to maintain the capacity for dialogue with your former partner could be one of the most positive results you secure on your children’s behalf. Thanks to our experience of divorces of all shapes and sizes over many years, we have had the privilege of working with counsellors, advisors and other professionals on the most effective approaches to dealing with conflict and offer the benefit of this combined knowledge to our clients.

I was so thankful that I engaged Withers to handle my private affairs. They were extraordinarily professional, discreet and above all, kind. They saw me through a very difficult time, with tact, diplomacy and an abundance of wisdom, for which I am extremely grateful.
