Ushan enjoys a broad-based international arbitration and litigation practice. Ushan regularly appears in commercial arbitrations relating to shareholder and joint venture disputes. He is frequently instructed to act in arbitration-related litigation before the Singapore Court and advises clients from numerous jurisdictions regarding the arbitral process and enforcement of arbitral awards in Singapore.

As a seasoned advocate, Ushan is adept at handling both trial and appellate litigation in relation to high-value, cross-border commercial disputes especially in the areas of joint ventures, software contracts, private equity / venture capital investments, trust, commodities, banking and securities.

He is often instructed by both local and foreign law firms to act as instructed counsel in relation to a myriad of complex and novel disputes before the High Court and the Court of Appeal. He was recently engaged as an expert to opine on matters of Singapore law in relation to ongoing court proceedings in Hong Kong. He was also recently involved in two matters before the Singapore Court of Appeal which raised novel and important questions of law: Anil Singh Gurm v J S Yeh & Co [2020] SGCA 05 and VDZ v VEA [2020] SGCA 75.

Ushan’s expertise has been recognised by several publications. He has been praised by clients for being a lawyer who impresses with ‘his very quick grasp of the financial figures’ and ‘his sharp observations, insight, and succinct summaries’. The Legal 500 Asia Pacific recommends Ushan for Dispute Resolution (Local Firms) (2020 edition).

Ushan graduated from the National University of Singapore with a Double Degree with Honours in Law and Business Administration (Finance) in 2010 and was called to the Singapore Bar in 2011. He was placed on the Dean’s List during the course of his studies.

[2020] SGCA 75: VDZ v VEA – Acted in the Court of Appeal in relation to contempt proceedings where the Court exercised, in the context of a matrimonial dispute, its exceptional jurisdiction to grant judicial mercy to temper the punishment to be imposed

[2020] SGHC 217: The Management Corporation Strata Title Plan No. 0827 v Aikyu Trading Co (Pte) Ltd – Acted in the High Court in an appeal from the State Courts relating to a dispute which raised matters of public importance for the first time, including the proper interpretation and ambit of s 47(1) of the Building Maintenance and Strata Management Act (Cap 30C, 2008 Rev Ed)
