Katharine Landells
Partner
Katharine is a partner in the divorce and family team.
She is a lateral thinker who puts solutions at the heart of her approach. No stranger to big ticket litigation, with several reported cases to her name, her experience fighting tough cases is put to good use for all of her clients who need clear advice and well defined strategy. Recognised for her abundance of energy and her focus on building strong relationships, Katharine’s client service is second to none. She combines a sharp eye for detail with a big picture view, keeping her clients’ objectives in mind.
Her experience ranges across the whole family law spectrum but she has a track record of dealing with cases involving complex asset structures, privately held businesses, and trusts, often where there is also an international dynamic. She also has significant expertise in cases concerning the international relocation of children and highly contested contact arrangements.
Although she’s always prepared to take the gloves off when necessary, Katharine is a negotiator and a pragmatist and will settle cases where possible. She is collaboratively trained and is a strong advocate of all alternatives to the traditional court process, where it is right for the client and the case.
Katharine has been recommended in both Spears and Legal 500 since 2014 and she appears in Chambers and Partners 2018 as an Up and Coming individual. Described as "exceptional, and a true professional", Katharine is considered one of the "standout" individuals. In 2017, Katharine was top recommended in Spears’ Top 50 family lawyers as combining a "love of detail with an ability to empathise with her client" and credited in Legal 500 2017 as ‘fiendishly bright’, fighting ‘her client’s corner hard but with elegance and style’. Chambers and Partners 2018 describes her as "a real powerhouse," highlighting her "intelligent, sharp and emotionally intelligent" approach.

Katharine represented the wife in Christoforou v Christoforou [2016], a case involving complicated issues surrounding onshore and offshore property owning companies, including the beneficial ownership of the shares in those companies, the categorization of assets as marital or non-marital, and the assessment and treatment of potential tax liabilities. The wife was awarded an equal division of the assets and a proportion of her costs to be paid by her husband.
Acting for the wife in X v X [2016], Katharine was successful in arguing that the husband’s interest in a trust should be considered a resource of his. The case also involved complex issues in respect of contribution, share valuation and non-matrimonial assets.
Katharine acted for the husband in the case of Charman v Charman, the leading case on trusts in the context of divorce and which case involved litigation in England and offshore. The court also recognised Mr Charman’s special contribution resulting in a 63/37% division in Mr Charman’s favour.
