The art and fashion industries celebrate the life of Karl Lagerfeld

The news of Karl Lagerfeld’s passing on February 19 was mourned by fashion designers, celebrities and fans worldwide. Although Lagerfeld was globally recognized in fashion as the creative director of Chanel and Fendi, he was also a talented visual artist who began drawing at a young age and took up photography. As a result, his work often was a cross between fine arts and fashion. Last December, Chanel held a fashion show in the Temple of Dendur at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (the first time in a decade for the museum to host a runway show). For Paris Fashion Week in 2014, 75 pieces of art that were designed by Lagerfeld lined the runway for his fashion show at the Grand Palais.

Lagerfeld was a pioneer of the parallel art and fashion industries, as more brands work together with artists, galleries and museums. We look forward to continuing to see this trend in major collaborations between artists and brands, from high end brands such as Louis Vuitton’s collaboration with Jeff Koons to household names such as Uniqlo’s collaboration with MoMA.
