Dr Isaac Black

Isaac is an associate in the intellectual property and technology team.

He joined the firm from JAG Shaw Baker when they merged with Withers to create a new legal offering, Withers tech, in 2018.

Isaac is involved in matters across the full range of the group’s practice. On the non-contentious side Isaac has advised on GDPR compliance, licensing issues, and generally has experience of drafting and negotiating a wide variety of commercial contracts including SaaS (software as a service) agreements, IP licences, and confidentiality agreements. He has also acts in contentious matters, with recent examples including actions for copyright infringement, trade mark oppositions, and telecommunications disputes.

Isaac’s work has an emphasis on the technology and life sciences sectors, predominantly with early-stage companies. This stems from his PhD research, which was conducted in close collaboration with an Oxford biotechnology spin-out company developing novel genetic methods for the control of disease-carrying mosquitoes.

Isaac spent six months as in-house legal counsel at Ennismore, the global hospitality developer and operator of the Hoxton and Gleneagles hotels.

Acted for a national newspaper in a high-profile copyright infringement dispute (involving the digital rights in an audio-visual work) against another national newspaper.

Assisted a well-known fashion designer with copyright ownership and licensing issues surrounding an image of Marilyn Monroe to be used on clothing.

Advised a manufacturer of high-end knives on the commercial implications of new UK legislation designed to make it more difficult for under-18s to obtain bladed articles.
