Julie is a partner in the real estate team with a focus on construction.

She specialises in non-contentious work for the construction, engineering and energy sectors. Julie established the real estate construction team at Withers in October 2013. Her clients include high-net worth individuals, charities and other not-for profit organisations, institutional investors, hotel groups, developers (commercial and residential), universities and major retailers.

Her practice also extends to advising contractors, specialist sub-contractors and consultants. Julie undertakes a wide variety of contract work for her clients - drafting and negotiating documents such as building and engineering contracts, framework agreements, professional appointments, security documents and associated transaction documents. She also advises on EU procurement law in a construction context and provides project support services (including pre-dispute and settlement advice) for a number of clients.

I am fascinated by the built environment, building processes and all aspects of design

Had I worked harder at maths, I would have been an architect. I am fascinated by the built environment, building processes and all aspects of design. So as a trainee, I was excited to discover that construction law was a real (and growing) practice area on which I could eventually focus. In the early years I had a mixed practice combining transactional work, project delivery and dispute resolution.

I soon realised however that my heart lay in ‘front end’ work and that has been my focus for over 16 years. I love the team dynamic of working on construction matters. When a project reaches completion, very often I will have worked with some of the most talented designers, technicians and contractors in the industry to realise a client’s vision.

The work product is so tangible, something to appreciate both pre and post completion, and for that reason I always encourage my team to visit the sites of the schemes they are working on to better understand the environments in which their contracts operate.

The diversity of my client base is something I really value at Withers. Project support for private clients presents quite different challenges for a construction lawyer in contrast to working for developers and institutions who know the ropes.

I am most proud of the work I do with charity trustees and other institutions delivering large capital projects for research, healthcare and educational purposes. Earlier in my career I also advised a main contractor delivering one of the principal sporting venues at the London 2012 Olympic Games. The venue was award winning, continues to attract large numbers of visitors, and was a thrill to work on.
