Overview

Ashokan has been in the legal services for the past 26 years. Through his years of practice, Ashokan has accumulated vast experience in both contentious and non-contentious matters, although his primary focus now lies in contentious matters.

The contentious matters that Ashokan handles comprise civil and criminal matters in respect of which he has appeared in the State Courts, High Court and the Court of Appeal of Singapore. Ashokan’s experience in civil litigation spans a wide area, including administrative and constitutional law, tort law, bankruptcy and insolvency law, corporate and commercial law, defamation law, employment law, family law, immigration law, insurance and reinsurance law and property law.

Ashokan’s criminal practice covers a broad spectrum of white-collar and blue-collar cases, including cases involving corruption, criminal misappropriation, fraud, tax evasion, drink driving, voluntarily causing hurt, outrage of modesty, murder, drug-related and immigration-related offences. Apart from contentious matters, Ashokan is also experienced in handling non-contentious matters and has advised numerous clients on matters such as conveyance, probate and preparation of tenancy, share, distribution, franchise, and a spectrum of many other agreements to suit clients' requirements.

Ashokan’s clients include multi-national and local corporations, individuals, statutory boards, town councils and registered societies, including the Law of Society of Singapore.

  • The Law Society of Singapore v Manjit Singh s/o Kirpal Singh and another [2015] SGHC 95 (Disciplinary Proceedings - acted for The Law Society of Singapore. Respondents were struck off the rolls)
  • Public Prosecutor v Viswamoorthy s/o Ramanathan [2014] SGDC 277 (Corruption – client was acquitted after trial)
  • Re Caplan Jonathan Michael QC [2013] 3 SLR 66; [2013] SGHC 75 (Application for admission of Queen’s Counsel)
  • Public Prosecutor v Tham See Wai Sylvia [2010] SGDC 514 (Criminal Breach of Trust and Forgery – client was acquitted after trial)
  • Chai Kang Wei Samuel v Shaw Linda Gillian [2010] 3 SLR 587; [2010] SGCA 22 (Tort - Negligence - Contributory Negligence)

Appointments and Memberships
 

  • Appointed by the Minister of Transport as Council Member of the Public Transport Council and he served in this Council for 4 years from August 2007 to January 2012.
  • Received his letter of appointment as a District Councillor for Central Singapore Community Development Council from the Prime Minister, Mr Lee Hsien Loong on 19 July 2009 and 10 September 2011.
  • Appointed as Honorary Legal Advisor for The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport since 2011.
  • Fellow of The Singapore Institute of Arbitrators.
  • Committee member of the Citizen's Consultative Committee in the Moulme in-Kallang Group Representative Constituency.
  • Member of the Law Society of Singapore as well as the Singapore Academy of Law.
  • Committee member of the Law Society's Professional Indemnity Committee.
  • Member of International Bar Association.
  • Appointed as a Notary Public and a Commissioner for Oaths.

On a personal note

Ashokan has a keen interest in golf. He is active in community work and provides free legal advice at a legal clinic on a regular basis for the past 25 years.
