Japan's renewable energy sector has continued to evolve rapidly over the past 12 months. Whilst the government has continued its strong support for battery storage through the Long-Term Decarbonization (LTDA) scheme, it has also tightened other rules, including stricter EIA requirements for certain project types.

A flood of grid connection applications for storage projects has shown the attractiveness of the Japanese market, but has also led to new requirements being introduced to manage connection requests more effectively.

On the lender side, increasing numbers of merchant BESS projects are now receiving project financing from a wider number of financial institutions. Both domestic and foreign investors are moving to take advantage of these conditions to drive storage projects forward at a rate not previously seen in the Japanese market.

Our Tokyo and Singapore partners have been advising on numerous projects over the past year. Join them as they share their experience and practical insights into recent Japanese market developments, including:

  • The upcoming 4th LTDA Round - lessons and insights for developers and investors from the 3rd Round, and the additional requirements being introduced for the upcoming 4th Round
  • The new grid connection rules – what do they mean for project feasibility and economics?
  • EIA rule changes – which projects are caught, and how will this impact on development timelines?
  • Bankability – with project financing now emerging for merchant BESS projects, how are lenders approaching merchant revenue risk and revenue stacking, and what can developers do to improve bankability?
  • FIT-to-FIP conversions – with the continuing wave of FIT-to-FIP conversions, what are the key issues for such projects, how are lenders approaching FIP and corporate PPA projects, and what are the key bankability considerations for revenue structures and offtake arrangements?

Who should attend?

Project developers, lenders, infrastructure investors, fund managers, energy companies, data centre operators and businesses considering investment opportunities in Japan's energy transition sector.
