Sophie is a senior associate in the private client and tax team.

Sophie's work incudes: 

  • Estate planning, such as drafting wills, letters of wishes, lasting powers of attorney and life insurance policy trusts and advising on the tax and practical implications of passing personal and business assets to the next generation.
  • Advising clients on how to structure the succession of wealth down generations during their lifetime, including the establishment of trusts, family partnerships and family investment companies and the ongoing operation of such structures.
  • Advising entrepreneurs on ways to tax efficiently structure their business interests and the succession of their business interests. Sophie often advises entrepreneurs as to the tax planning they can undertake prior to a liquidity event. 
  • Advising individuals in advance of moving to the UK in relation to their pre-arrival tax planning, often including how best to structure the purchase of a home in the UK.
  • Advising on family governance, succession and the introduction of the next generation to the family's wealth or family business, often working in conjunction with single or multiple family offices. This can include the preparation of family charters.
  • Assisting clients to establish charities and advising in relation to their philanthropic ventures, tax efficient gifting options and the interplay between philanthropy and estate planning. Sophie is a member of Withers' Philanthropy special interest group. 
  • Advising on knotty trust law issues often linked to the exercise of trustees' power and the taxation of offshore trusts.

Entrepreneurs

Advising an entrepreneur whose business was shortly listing as to the tax planning opportunities available prior to the listing and establishing a trust to hold the shares and a charity to be funded with certain of the sale proceeds.

Family investment companies

Taking existing companies (whether trading or investment) and creating new share classes, such as growth shares, as a means of passing wealth to the next generation in a tax efficient manner whilst also retaining control. 

Family partnerships

Creating family partnerships as an effective succession planning tool whcih enable control to be preserved by the wealth creators.

Philanthropy

Advising a family making a £50m charitable donation to a UK charity, using offshore funds and how to do so in a tax efficient manner. 

Property structuring

Advising on the tax consequences and various structuring options available to a family purchasing a London property, with a value in excess of £120 million.

Trust and family governance advice

Ongoing tax and trust support to a wealthy family, who have UK trading businesses held within UK trusts and offshore trusts. Advising the family on the introduction of the next generation to the structures and family wealth, and advising on family governance matters.
