Withers expands international venture capital and life sciences team with launch in Boston

19 April 2021 | Applicable law: US

Withers has expanded its international Withers tech practice to the US with the hire of a new team of life sciences and venture capital focused attorneys in Boston, consisting of three partners and a patent specialist, working alongside Boston-based Withers tech attorney Andrew Gay.

The creation of a base in Boston, one of the US’s leading centers for life science research and commercialization, as well as a major venture capital hub, enables Withers tech to join up and expand on client relationships in London and Cambridge in the UK, where the team was established in 2018, Europe and Asia, where Withers tech also recently launched a team.

The Boston team includes partners John Serio, Dr Richard Emmons and Dr Christopher Cowles, all joining from Burns & Levinson, along with patent specialist Kristina Scandore joining from Hamilton, Brook, Smith & Reynolds. Andrew Gay joined the firm in 2018 as part of the JAG Shaw Baker team.

The new team represents clients on the FDA regulatory and approval process, IP advice including patent and trademark protection and litigation and the licensing of technology, and venture capital deal structuring.

James Shaw, global head of the Withers tech team, comments: “We are really excited to continue the expansion of our support for global tech and innovation clients with the US launch of Withers tech. For many of our clients who are managing private capital funds, the tech and life sciences sectors are major focuses, and the devastating damage of Covid-19 has hugely reinforced life sciences as an attractive investment target. The addition of our Boston team affirms our commitment to technology, life sciences and venture capital clients in the US and establishes a really robust network to back all of our clients working and investing in the sector around the world.”

John Serio adds: ‘We are really excited to be joining Withers and getting closer to colleagues we have worked with for many years on major projects. For our team, this move provides a strong international platform which will deliver a full suite of legal services to our clients wherever they’re operating, but I would also underscore the significance of extending the Withers tech team to one of the US’s life sciences hubs. We look forward to continuing to grow Withers tech’s presence across the US.’:Withers has expanded its international Withers tech practice to the US with the hire of a new team of life sciences and venture capital focused attorneys in Boston, consisting of three partners and a patent specialist, working alongside Boston-based Withers tech attorney Andrew Gay.
